The lineage

The Shape Matrix is Lorq Nichols', who publishes as Spin Science. He describes it best himself: “A Shape Matrix is like a multiplication table for tricks (moves, patterns) that you can do with your left or right hand.” Twelve left-hand driving styles against twelve right-hand ones: the even-petaled prospin and antispin shapes across the 1:1, 1:3 and 1:5 ratios. He charted it in 2012 and reworked it in 2014 and 2016.

It is not a separate tradition from the Vulcan Tech Gospel. It is page 32 of one: the Shape Matrix appears in Vulcan Tech Gospel Book of P.H.A.T. Volume 1, illustrated and written by Nichols in collaboration with Brian Thompson, David Cantor and Noel Yee. Yee lists all four as VTG authors. Nichols, for his part, thanked “Noel Yee (this chart intrinsically encompasses transition theory), and all the Vulcan Tech Gospel crew.”

The chart was paper doing what a simulator does today: lay the space out so you can find what you have not tried. This page draws the same table live from the alphabet, one shape per cell, every cell clickable. Rows are blue-hand flowers, columns red-hand; matched styles on the diagonal are basic shapes, and every other cell overlaps the two into a hybrid.

Lorq Nichols' 144 Shape Matrix: a twelve by twelve grid of even-petaled flower shapes. Columns are twelve left-hand driving styles, rows are twelve right-hand styles, grouped by 1:1, 1:3, and 1:5 hand-to-prop ratios.
